Every year, the arrival of November sparks a familiar mix of curiosity and anxiety across our region. Homeowners want to know how many times they’ll be shoveling. Snow plow contractors want to know how many events to budget for. Municipalities want to know whether staffing and salt supplies are ready. And everyone, whether they admit it or not, wants just a little hint of what winter may have in store.
At NorCast, our winter outlook is not about predicting every storm months in advance — that’s not how the atmosphere works. Instead, we examine the large-scale drivers shaping the season: ocean temperatures, jet stream configuration, teleconnections, and the signals that increase or reduce the likelihood of certain weather types. That gives us a “roadmap,” not a guarantee, but a meaningful one.
This year, that roadmap is particularly interesting — and a bit feisty.
The Big Picture: A Weak La Niña Winter With Strong Wildcards

The 2025–26 winter is being shaped by a weak La Niña, meaning the equatorial Pacific waters are slightly cooler than normal. It will likely become neutral later winter,.La Niña influences the position of the Pacific jet stream, which often rides farther north into western Canada before diving back down into the central and eastern U.S.
This pattern tends to produce:
- Big temperature swings
- Fast-moving clipper systems
- A more active storm track across the northern half of the nation
- Less reliable moisture for classic coastal nor’easters
- A “battle zone” in the Mid-Atlantic where cold air and moisture may or may not link up
But La Niña is only one piece of the puzzle.

Other major players this winter include:
• The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)
When the NAO goes negative, blocking sets up over Greenland, allowing cold air to pour south and storms to ride the coast. When it’s positive, we get milder, less snowy patterns.
This winter, the NAO is projected to swing between phases — a recipe for volatility. There are enough supporting factors where it could be negative more often and that is what is shown in the above image with the ridging in place in the northern Atlantic.
• The Arctic Oscillation (AO)
Like the NAO, a negative AO supports Arctic intrusions into the East. Models suggest several windows where this could happen.
• The Polar Vortex
If it stays strong, cold remains bottled up near the Arctic. If it weakens — or splits — the door opens for major cold outbreaks.
There is a Sudden Stratospheric Warming event now that is going to cause some weakening to be common in the early winter periods. Now does it send cold air into Asia or the UK or the US? That is not always known very well. At least a weaker PV episode has a better chance at delivering cold into parts of America. So the probability of cold stretches the first half of winter is higher.

There will be some up and down temps early December before a colder pattern settles in. While a seasonal forecast is broad and general because confidence and higher likelihood with probability goes down with specifics. Unlike what you might see on Accuweather or Farmers Almanac narrowing down weather into daily or weekly details a month out, those are guesses. Generally, it’s colder and more active into January. By some time in mid-January things might very well shift into February where warmer air is more common. We might have the moisture source, but big storm chances go down across the Eastern part of the nation.
A lot of the pattern drivers the second half of winter will be more on the forecastable 10-20 days out basis versus months. These type of regimes might allow cold to come back the end of winter and early spring and push more warmth out west.

What the Evolving Pattern Means Across the United States
With the atmosphere transitioning from a weak La Niña toward ENSO-neutral conditions, the winter pattern across the U.S. will be defined by contrast and variability. No single region locks into one theme for the entire season; instead, the country becomes a patchwork of warm pockets, cold pools, active storm corridors, and quieter zones.
The western states, central Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, Northeast, South, and Southwest all experience these winters differently — and this year, those differences will be sharp.
Temperature Trends Across the Country
The national temperature outlook highlights a familiar La Niña-to-neutral pattern:
Colder-Than-Normal Zones
- Northern Plains
- Upper Midwest
- Great Lakes
- Northern Rockies into Montana and the Dakotas
Cold air from western Canada frequently spills into these regions thanks to a strengthened northern jet stream.
Near-Normal Zones
- Central Plains
- Interior West
- Northern and central Appalachians
These are transition zones — sometimes very cold, sometimes very mild depending on ridge placement.
Warmer-Than-Normal Zones
- Southwest
- Southern tier of the U.S. — Texas across the Gulf Coast
- Southeast → Mid-Atlantic coast
- Parts of New England’s coastal corridor
Warmth builds through the Southwest and South thanks to a semi-persistent subtropical ridge and strong Pacific influence. It’s all about how strong the Southeast ridge will be. If it’s persistent and strong then the battle zone shifts further north and west and the Mid Atlantic becomes pretty warm with even the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes above average. If it’s weaker then expected then even the Southeast could be below average.

Nationwide Precipitation Patterns
Your precipitation map shows the U.S. divided into three broad regimes:
Wetter-Than-Normal
- Pacific Northwest → Northern Rockies
- Northern Plains, Upper Midwest
- Ohio Valley and portions of the central U.S.
A stronger Pacific jet feeds storms into the northern tier, enhancing moisture intrusions and frequent disturbances.
Near-Normal
- Central Plains
- Interior West
- Mid-Atlantic → Northeast corridor
These areas sit between major storm tracks. Storm impacts vary dramatically depending on jet placement.
Drier-Than-Normal
- Southwest (CA, AZ, NM)
- Texas → Gulf Coast
- Southeast into southern Mid-Atlantic
The subtropical jet is weaker in a La Niña-transition winter, and the southern storm corridor is less active.

National Snowfall Outlook
Your snowfall map closely tracks the temperature and precipitation distributions: While what will actually happen as we look hindsight 20/20 in the rearview at the end of winter this can vary. It only takes one proper phasing of the jet streams to bring cold and heavy snow to an area that is overall dry and warm as far as seasonal averages go.
But this is where the honestly and transparency of seasonal forecasting goes. We have no idea if that scenario will happen.
Above-Normal Snow
- Upper Midwest and Northern Plains
- Great Lakes region (lake effect enhanced)
- Northern Rockies
- Inland Northeast (especially upstate NY and interior New England)
Frequent clippers, cross-polar flow, and northern jet activity drive the snow machine here. Lake effect snow events are probably slightly above average because of the more frequent cold fronts expected and above average lake temperatures creating more instability.
Storm Tracks
Miller B storms begin as inland systems (often from the Plains and Midwest) that transfer their energy to a new low developing along the coast. This process can create a secondary coastal low, which then moves northeast. Miller B storms often bring mixed precipitation—rain changing to snow as cold air rushes in—and can produce moderate to heavy snowfall on the northern side. Clippers and these type of storms can be common in this type of La Nina setup. We might also see some Panhandle Hooks, but probably less southern Miller A systems into Nor’easters.

Winter 2025–26 Recap: What It All Means for You
When you take all the atmospheric signals together — the La Niña-to-neutral transition, the shifting jet streams, the early-season temperature swings, and the late-winter wildcard factors — one message becomes clear:
This winter won’t be defined by constant cold or endless storms… but it will be defined by variability.
For the general public, that means you’ll feel those classic back-and-forth swings: mild days, sudden cold snaps, messy travel systems, and a storm or two with real impact depending on where you live. It won’t be the snowiest winter on record, but it won’t be a “dud,” either. Different parts of the country will have very different experiences — a busy northern tier, quieter southern tier, and a constantly shifting middle zone where temperature is the deciding factor. This has the potential to be one of the snowiest years we have seen in several winters in the Midwest and Great Lakes (i know that might not be saying much).
For snow contractors, facility managers, and anyone responsible for winter operations, the story is a bit different. A winter full of fluctuations means:
- More freeze–thaw cycles
- More black ice mornings
- More marginal-temperature headaches
- More light but necessary treatment events
- And the potential for a late-season punch if blocking returns or the Polar Vortex weakens
These are the winters that test planning, preparation, and the ability to react quickly. They’re not straightforward, and they’re not the kind you can “set and forget.” They reward the people who stay ahead of the pattern — not just the next storm.
